MIND MAP / TOPIC / TIMELINE

Today we brought our ideas of how to connect and pair up for the collaboration pages. We started with putting down everyone’s connection on a huge mind map, and try to find the most suitable, exciting ones.

It is so much clearer to see all the ideas when we started to put them down, it is also interesting to see how we might find different connections and ideas to pair up our own works with the other. Since there are quite a lot possibilities for us to pair up. We then started to also think about the sequence of our individual project. So it won’t feel the magazine is boring to read and will have a nice flow.

Instead of using our original collection name of the project, each of us try to come up with a statement or question to connect our overarching topic with our individual work. So it will feel less like our “portfolio” page but a professional editorial.

We started with Ciccy’s topic (which is also our overarching quesiton) “what is your true self?” following with Rika’s collection “Physical self equals/not equals to true self”. We in the end swap Mengdi and my sequence as we want to balance the textiles and fashion projects. Also colour wise, Mengdi’s work will use red and more eye-catching colors while I’m using black and white, and Rika’s work is using muted colors as well. We tried to considered the reader experience and balance the visuals and also the concept with the orders. In the last part is Kaelan’s “I feel, therefore i am, ” which connects to my concept “to show or not to show.” Both of them are talking about the emotions and feeling of human from different perspectives. And in the end Yinan’s “Healing through feeling”

We are quite fond with this orders and flow. And the final group collaboration also follows this order: Ciccy& Rika, Mengdi& I, Kaelan& Yinan.

We also briefly discuss what we might want the format to be so we can all start to look at layout that works for that. Our initial ideas is to have our three collaboration in the middle of two people’s individual projects. And that page will be a smaller size insert or spread so people will know it is a different theme or editorial from our individual works. Also we want to reshoot the collaboration part all in capture studio under similar lighting and setup so these three collaboration pages will tie together everyone’s work and make the zine more coherent.

I also made a timetable to track our progress and make sure everything will be done in time. I am also planning my own photoshoot at the same time and I’m thinking finding Nathan to collaborate for the shooting, hence I also put my personal schedule (in green) for myself to keep track of everything.
