I’ve been working on the layout lately for our group publication. we have been discussing quite a lot of how we want it to be and my teammates also show me some reference layout and some ideas. Then I just started to draft our layout so all of our individual pages will follow the same grid and similar format, thus will make the whole book looks coherent. I also think the first spread of each our individual works needs to be similar, so each of us will have biography, one photo and intro of our project.
For the cover we already decide on using the font Futura, it’s a nice and classic sans serif font that have the modern and minimal quality that can speak to our publication. I also like how it is extremely geometric, like the “o” is almost a perfect rounded circle. The geometry will also run through our layout and create the futuristic and modern visuals for our zine. As the title “PERSONAI” is our topic and is almost like a logo on our cover, I adjusted the kerning of the font to balance the space between and try to make it more visually pleasing.

As for the layout I use three columns, and one third is a common portion I used on the layout. I tried to keep the text into a geometry on the page. But still by wisely using typeface and font size, the information is still easy to read and understand.
First spread will have one page as designer biography and one page as project introduction. The photo will be printed on translucent polyester paper overlaying on top of the text.
I give a lot of spaces for images to strengthen the visual expression. Also we added a 1mm orange steps on the page sides. This come from one of Ciccy’s reference that a magazine printed a thin line of colour on the edge of the page, so when you flip it you can see the colors from the side of the book. This is also a hint to unify all of our pages and make our individual works into a group.
Our group is quite satisfied with this layout so I sent them the grid to let them follow, and after they create the pages based on the grid by themselves, I will fine tuning again each pages to make sure they are visually well designed and coherent to our layout.
